What is 1990 Lexington Ave?

What is 1990 Lexington Ave?

1990 Lexington Avenue, more commonly referred to as “Nineteen-ninety” by residents, is an East Harlem high-rise, constructed in 1974 [http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=1990lexingtonavenuenue-newyorkcity-ny-usa] This red brick structure towers over Lexington avenue between 121st and 122nd streets—a short distance between New York’s Harlem and East River. While most of Manhattan is inundated with high-rise structures, they are few and far between in the uptown region of Harlem. In fact, with the exception of three towers along 1st avenue (adjacent to the East River) and the quadrant of the four Taino Towers (found between 3rd and 2nd avenues/122nd to 123rd streets), 1990 is the only other building in East Harlem to exceed 18 stories.

Standing 33 stories tall, with spectacular views of Manhattan, Central Park, Yankee Stadium, Randall’s Island, the East River and Upper East Side, and of course Harlem, this building is the length of a city block. Its red brick facing covers a solid steel construction, which somehow dampers any vibration from the Lexington Avenue subway line above which it is firmly planted. Like an oak tree in a forest of ferns, this scraper exudes an unwavering, utilitarian prowess. A monolith to a tough neighborhood with even tougher construction, 1990 will outlive many of its past and present tenants.

During the poverty and crime of the 1970s, the need for affordable housing hit Harlem harder than most any other neighborhood in America. 1990 was built to fill this very void. An alternative to the myriad housing projects of that surrounding area (of which there are dozens), 1990 Lexington Ave boasted large living spaces, high-rise architecture and best of all terraces. With a Section 8 voucher and some luck, tenants could look down their noses (literally) at the rest of the city who were subjected to sky-rocketing rents and defunct, decrepit living conditions. Furthermore, the modernity of the building post-dated steam heat, allowing for electric baseboard systems to be installed in every room of every apartment. Even air conditioner sleeves were spaced appropriately in all rooms. For the tenants, who were primarily all low-income, the fact that all utilities were included allowed for a very comfortable urban lifestyle. In short, the infestations, the scorching heat or bitter cold, the ubiquity of urban decay, was something that could have very easily been shut out of 1990 Lexington Avenue.

I was born n raised in 1990. Up until mid year of 2005, I would had agreed. Great location but bad neighborhood. Its not what it use to be when I was growin up. Although I slander this place, I still love it bcuz it was all I knew as a child. Advice to all, visit/move at own risk. Do plenty of background checking.

Their elevators are always broken; there's bed bugs and mice; and kids piss and smoke in the hallways. This place is horrible. I wouldn't even recommend this place to a bum on the street.

Honestly, I don't understand these negative comments! I have lived in The Miles @ 1990 Lexington Avenue for several years now, and it has been the best apartment I've ever had in NYC. It is very affordable, has great amenities, and is in an up-and-coming neighborhood. I have never experienced any of the negative things mentioned in the previous posts, and I would recommend this apartment to everyone (including friends and family)! Don't listen to the previous posts!

The Miles 1990 Lexington Avenue is a Giant Slum!!! The building is invested with Mice, Roaches, Bedbugs and drug addicts and sellers. Gunshots are a frequent occurance in the summertime. Tenents in the front of the building had bullets come through there terrace all the way up to the 11th floor, during this past summer, that had so much gun violence, the police took to standing right under the building. The thugs still shot at eachother with police right there! Most floors in the building are riddled with bullet holes in doors, windows, and elevators, a testament to this dangerous place. This one block is the most dangerous in the city after Brownsville in Brooklyn. Ask the 25th Precient. Tenents throw objects that can kill you from the terraces. Police walk by looking up, well aware of this problem. Cars park around the perimeter are often targets of large items thrown and are damage on a regular basis. I've seen 5 galloon paint cans thrown on numerous occassions. The building has 4 elevators and their always breaking down. The building is long overdue for new ones, but they refuse to replace. There are long lines just to get on. Market rent apartments look nice, but hide the mice holes that are not repaired behind custom kitchens. Mice frequently pop out of the heater. They live and thrive in compactor rooms, as the nasty tenents throw the garbage right on the floor. Most do so in fear of actually taking the time to place down the shoots because of the Mice. Drug users frequent the dimly lit staircases. Management just tries to reel in Market rent tenants, who move out immediately as soon as their lease is up! Many white people have moved in, and move out just as quick. Though it looks nice on the outside, it is worse than the Projects. Tenenants are rude, ignorant and most on Government Programs. Teens prowl the hallways wild and unruly. Security is just for show, as they do nothing to stop these roving band of teenagers. Longtime residents suffer in silence, fearful of eviction. Don't move in this building unless you are not adverse to drugs, gunfire and vermin! ALL POSITIVE COMMENTS ARE LEFT BY MANAGEMENT TRYING TO RENT THE NUMEROUS EMPTY APARTMENTS. COME SEE FOR YOURSELF WHAT I SAY IS TRUE!!!

Dear Anonymous,
Your endeavors to deface 1990 won’t succeed. There is not a single bullet hole in the entire building; BB gun is not a real gun, you know.
The truth is that you will not find the low rents with the views that 1990 offer, 3 blocks away from the 4, 5 and 6 train. The fire exit staircases may not look same a Trump Plaza staircases, but at least don’t smell (anymore, thanks to a new enzyme solution). There is one elevator that is being worked at and 3 others that work, rush hour is rush hour everywhere.
“It’s a beautiful building from the outside” – no it’s not, it’s a 32 story red brick building! However, the views are awesome. The apartments are new. Your only correct statement you said right is "COME AND SEE," the "numerous empty apartment" – 8 empty out of the 341 apartments.
Judgment should always be based on comparison.
I work at 1990. Yes “come and see” and ask security if would like to meet.

I'm sorry, but I'd have to agree w/ anon's long post. I don't live there anymore, but when I did (2 years ago), this was the exact story. From what I understand, they are on their 3rd building manager in 4 years. That's saying something about what's going on there. They are trying to make the place more appealing, but I really think that the place needs a serious gutting and cleaning to minimize the pest problem, rather than painting and plastering over huge problems. And it is very true that the elevators are broken all the time. The wait isn't the issue. It's the fact that the wait is so long because at least one or two of the elevators aren't working properly, or at all.

I also felt ripped off by the massive $200+ increase in rent per year for a market rate lease renewal, especially when the pest problem was escalating.

I did feel relatively safe at the location, I admit, but it costs being grossed out on more than rare occasion by pests and urine smells, etc.

I'd say check it out more than twice before even applying. Get a real feel for the place. then you be the judge. It is a matter of personal preference. But be wary of the cost of renewing after year 1.

My boyfriend lived at 1990 and it was dangerous. His roommate got off the elevator on a quiet day and 2 punks followed him out, hit him, took his wallet, and ran. He wend down to security cause he knew what the kids looked like and they didn't call the cops or seem interested in this assault case. Hallways smell like weed, and getting close to stairwells all you smell is piss. Elevators are always broken. Maintenece is non-existant, their lock was broken on their door and the building took 3 months before they returned their relentless calls- they had to get it fixed themselves..a nightmare!
In the summer I heard gunshots from the bad neighborhood below. They make it seem like it's a deal with the view and all but it is falling apart and unsafe.

It's the winter and I witnessed a shooting every single day this week, including a murder on the front doorstep. Terrible place to live.

just got the sidewalk painted today. Thank God, that sidewalk REALLY needed a paint job. Good thing the lobby was done recently too. And the elevators were polished. Hanging in the building by a worn-out, dangerous set of rigging, but at least it's shiny! AND the sidewalk's painted!!!! YEEEAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!

I have been living in the building for the last 2-3 months and there has been some issues that made me and my roommate worry, as well. But I should say, the super is very kind and he is good at responding to our inquiries, especially to our emails, even during the weekend. Our biggest problem currently is the people next door who are driving us nuts by the loud music and extremely high bass sounds they make with their TV-music system and they do not seem to care the warnings from the management. For the last couple days they have been rather quiet and we are now hoping that they will change. The building need more respectful people because it is very diverse currently... So it's hard to say something general about it.

We just moved into 1990 a few weeks ago. Should we be worried for our safety in this building and this neighborhood - particularly walking from the subway at 125th?

Charles, I've been in the building for about 6 month. I haven't head about incidents inside the building; however, in Harlem, Bronx, Brooklyn and parts of of Queens people should keep their eyes open... Concrete jungle...

That long rant is above is so true! The building really is a mess, I've lived here for several years and will not be renewing my lease! Come on any summer day and you will be appalled by what you. This building not the neighborhood gets so dangerous. Teens line the front by the dozens and every night was a fight, a screaming cursing match or gun violence! And I have seen bullet holes in elevator doors and I've only been on 3 different floors! This last year the police have taken to posting in the lobby of the building for protection! I have never seen that in any other residential building, a testament to the danger! I have almost lost my job from being late so many times due to the elevator problems. A "repaired elevator" is only fixed for 2 days max!!! During this month alone the problem was so bad, you had to call if you wanted the elevator to stop on your floor! Had to find that out the hard way after waiting for over a half hour, when a neighbor came out and whipped out her cell phone to call security to have the elevator stop on our floor! It is true about the mice and the heaters! I lost a girlfriend who ran out screaming and crying never to return when one popped out, and scrambled across the living room floor. I've even seen them on the kitchen cabinets and we never cook! The pest control people just come in throw bags of poison behind the stove and leave! We have piles of them, all to no avail. So even though we have a great view, the rent is too high to live in the conditions that we have to suffer with, I have to agree with the long rant above! and will not be renewing my lease! Just hope I can live thru one more summer in this dangerous hell hole. P.S. the long rant person was right, the positive comment was admittedly from staff at the building, which is too funny to me! Any one interested in moving in should check it out several times, during the summer evening hours, and come any day and I guarantee you the thugs will be represented, the broken elevators will be represented, and you will only be days past a major violent incident!

Memorial day weekend, gunshots every night! Early Sat. there was a guy laying directly across the street from gunshot wounds. Last night was especially heavy with gunfire! Three separate incidents! First 6 loud booms and 1 small one, which I guess was return fire, then 2 hours later 4 tats, then hours later 6 big booms, that scared me awake. I looked out the window, I don't see any cop cars coming to investigate or anything! Really disturbing! Over the weekend the building got all 4 elevators working, but by the next evening only 2 was working. I heard a guy say this was the first time he been on a certain elevator and he been living here for a few years, people joked it was the first and the last time, sad to say they are right!

Another shootout just moments ago in broad daylight! Cops by the dozens in front of the building searching the thugs for guns as they always run in or toward the building! Three elevators working today, whats gonna be the story tomorrow? More gun fire thats for sure and probably down to two elevators!

I lived there from February 1975-February 1979. I lived on the 20th Floor (Actually the 19th floor). The building skipped the 13th floor. I lived in Apartment 20E.

Takes a lot to live here. Massive noisy. The Metro North constantly honking of horns as trains approach the platform. Honks are heard as 2 am and 4 to 5 am. Metro North is out of control with this practice. Gunshots almost every week. Even in the snowstorms. Ambulance, fire department and police sirens are a contstant drain on the quality of living. Peace and quiet is not an option if you're thinking of living here. Now, there the major issue of the people that live there. Whoa Fkn Whoa. First let just say that I grew up in the PJs where you see piss in the elevators all the time and smell human feces in the stairwells. No pissy elevators, but always dirty and definitly human feces in the stari wells. I must say they are doing a danm good job at cleaning up, but I can go on and on about the pampers the get thrown out the windows and the kotex and full cans of string beans. This should be a crime, but they won't bother to catch anyone. Security in the building is gansgsta. blah blah blah. This building friggin sux 150% of the time. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this place. The elevators never work and the people are GDAMN pigs. OH MY FKN GOD. Trust me your money is not worth the misery.

I still feel like I'm not done with my post and that I need to add more in order to elaborate on the wonderful experience I had during the 18 months I lived there. This building has got to be the worst building on the entire island of manhattan to live in. I had a super battle with mice and I won. I removed the radiators from the walls to insulate with the best foam glue specially made for vermin and a brillo concoction. I sealed underneath my cabinets with metal rods because they scraped and chewed through the wooden ones. I put metal flashing in the closets and stapled the rug back to the walls. I even swapped out the front door pest protector and put the same metal rod I used for the kitchen cabinets with enough room to see light and not be else to slide an envelope underneath..not even the roaches could come in through underneath the door. I insulated the whole apartment in many different places where there was a cold draft coming in (even the holes in the door frames where the latch falls in had freezing air pushing through) and all that the breeze still comeing in through the electrical outlets. During the winter time you will freeze in this building and you will need to buy a nice heater as I did. Did I mention that the people are the dirtiest bunch of savages I ever lived with? If I didn't mention that then I could write a whole book on just that. You have got to be kidding me that these people are the most vile, gross and disgusting people in all of NYC. Geeeeezes christ i've never seen such pig ass people ever and I grew up in the projects. MFs spit on the elevator buttons. MFs eat, sleep, shit and piss in the stairwells....urprised they can't live there. MFs smoke weed in the stairwells and the hallways so much that on certain floors cameras were installed. Drugs are sold in the building. A prostitute lived right above me in 31B and she's a real nasty lookin biotch. She need to git hur teeth done. Ewwwey she was busted. The walls in my apartment had water damage from the roof and i complaines and they never fixed it. When it rained the pain bubbled up with water. I can't count how many times I got in the elevator and MFs was smelling like weed. I've seen the security guards drinking beer. I've heard the kids in the elevators talking about their "baby 9 Milly". "Ohh it's so preety". The building needs to cease all operations and just kick everyone the f out and git itself a fresh start. The place feels like a GDAMN welfare office...especially when you're waiting on line for the elevator. Two of four and sometimes only one. Never all four elevators work all at once. Bunch of fools that live there. Eybody wanna be gangsta. Pretty rican girls wanna sound black and the black kids act blacker than they needs to. I ain't black and im blacker than they are. They gots no direction and no morals and no respect. Even the older ladies are just so ghetto. Evan the older Dominican ladies have zero class. The whole building is loaded with winners. STAY THE F AWAY FROM THAT BUILDING. Kid got killed on my first fathers day nad I saw the whole thing right from my balcony. Kid got killed jus the other day right before I moved out. Several kids got killed throughout the whole 18 months. One kid got shot six times right in the front of the building at 9am when everyone was on their way to work. You gotta be crazy to live there. It's like fallujah in Iraq.

what's with all these negative comments?!.. this is not a LUXURY CONDO!! if you are expecting respectful people, clean stairs, fast elevators, and responsible 24hr doorman.. then you should be looking elsewhere in midtown, downtown for $2000 a studio or bedroom. This place is cheap, and if you are cheap enough to wanting to live in a cheap apt. this is what you get... And the gunshots whatever they talk about, they are just exaggerations!! Do you seriously think in New York city nowadays you would hear gunshots in the same building everyday?! it's spanish harlem, just like areas certain areas in queens and brooklyn, it's different from suburban neighborhoods and midtown nyc! if you came from the country side where there're all white people. then sorry this is not the place for you. I have moved 10+ times in the past and I have to say this is one of the better deals. let me tell you, there are bed bugs and mice ALL OVER THE CITY! it's your own hygiene that's at question...

If you dont like it - LEAVE, I stay because it's convenient. Go live at the Taino towers or 1900 Lexington or anywhere around. You will not find anything better for the rent that we pay.

To live at 1990 Lex is pure insanity. Disgusting is all I have to say. F the price and yea I found a 4 bdrm for 1400 vs 2100 for a 3bdrm and Im still in NYC. Money is not an issue if you got an all you want to do is live, but you not going to live in 1900, because you just can't. Too much bullshit to put up with. 1990 is an atrocity. It needs to be condemned and then knocked down and new one built. PLEASE STOP TRYING TO DEFEND 1990 as I read the posts. This shootings are more frequent than anywhere else I've lived or even heard of and I know first hand as I lived there. Major repairs are needed aside from all elevators needing to be replaced. Oh and the people just suck. They have to create a barrier for elevator line skippers when only one and two elevators are working. NO ONE HAS ANY CLASS IN THIS BUILDING. F THAT.. You can defend 1990 all you want, but the truth is that many people are just plain stuck there and no of no other options because they care not to venture out. They can't because they're probably waiting for the elevator right now. How many times I stood up in my house because to deal with the elevators is just too much of a pain in the ass. I sometimes felt captive in my own building..especially on most weekends when the elevators breakdown on Fridays. You have to buy everyhting you can just so you don't have to leave for several days. Oh and the only way you're getting an elevator is if you live on the highest floors because everyone in between can't get in and they just plain walk down 20 or 15 flights on a regular basis. That is so not right. WTF???

Now that I moved out ..may got strike 1990 down with such ferosity and with all residents in it. Kill'em all and let GOD sort'em out.

One of the worst buildings and managements ever!! This building is the worst thing that happened to me in NYC! I moved here 6-7 months ago with my partner, and we had so many problems! Problems that actually effected my health and put me in depression. We are living in a two bedroom apt and we are not able to use our guest room - guess why? The "people" next door are the most disrespectful ones ever! 7/24 partying teenagers! Noisy to the extreme! Always loud TV, XBOX, Music that I can hear even from my living room! The walls are shaking even. And you know how they handle this? The super asks us to call the security. We do every time. They go to their door and NOTHING CHANGES! We are applying to get our lease canceled tomorrow and we are hoping it will go smoothly! We have been paying 1750/mo for a 2 bedroom and we haven't used that so called second room ever!! The next door teenagers also smoke pot and leave their window open so I can never open the window of the second room! Once I did that and all the apartment was smelling like pot! I am so furious with everything about this building! Do n't even get me started about the elevator situation, the rudeness of the tenants and low-hygiene standards they have...

DO NOT MOVE HERE!!! EVER!!!
1990 Lexington Avenue Building is also known as The Miles... Just warning you folks...

Anonymous said...

I give this apartment the worst rating of any apartment every! 1990 Lexington Ave aka the Miles between 121st and 122nd (KNW Apartments, LLC) is a disgusting place to live. We were duped into renting this apartment after viewing it at 10 AM on a Sunday morning by a shady broker from Citi Habitats named Joe Lui. That was mistake number one, make sure you see this building several times and at various times of the day. I won't even get into all the hassle we were put through by the broker but I give him a very low rating as well. The apartment was listed on Craigslist as a 2 bedroom for $1615 (a lie). Actually the apartment was $1750 per month but if we pay rent on time every month we will supposedly get a 13th month free. The apartment itself is modern and nice on the inside. As the low income renters with stabilized rents move out or die off, the management fixes up the apartments in an attempt to trick young professionals into moving into building. No decent tenants stay long - we decided within the first week that wanted out. There are so many numerous obnoxious, filthy people in the building. They urinate and defecate in the stair cases and the trash rooms, sometimes even in the hallways and elevators. The entire building smells of these odors. There is a rampant problem with mice and cock roaches. I have seen them in my apartment several times and caught two mice within the first month. It is impossible to keep up with the pests in such a large building where most of the other tenants maintain very low standards of living and cleanliness. The other tenants are very rude and resent the new, young professionals with jobs who are moving into the building at market-rate rents. There are four elevators and usually only 1 or 2 work at any given time and sometimes none at all. I have never, ever witnessed all 4 working at one time. I have walked up 20 flights of stairs numerous times when all elevators are out of order, suffocating under the heavy smells of urine, feces, and weed. When the elevators do work, there is a long line to wait for them with rude tenants attempting to cut in front of others. The neighborhood is just as disgusting as the building, this particular stretch of Lexington up to 125th is the center of people lingering all day and trash all over the streets and sidewalks. The building itself is also a hub for gangs and drug activity simply because of the size of the building - at 33 floors. The security at the front doors is all for show - they buzz EVERYONE into the building. People frequently throw objects off the balcony, I have watched fire crackers zip past my balcony and hit cars below. My neighbor was hit by a fire cracker in front of the building. I frequently hear gun shots outside on a nightly basis. Do not move into this building! You will regret it. There are plenty of other options for $1750 a month.

Erstwhile functioning elevators; filthy, ignorant, and violent neighbors who don't understand sound waves; toxic stairwells; pests = all true. But I don't know where these lower rent for better conditions are, because I would be there. I have been living here for about a year and a half and I've learned to cope. Very slowly things are improving, but I've had to exchange my standards for the low price. No one should have to live in these conditions but the posters who point out that we can leave at any time are correct -- I've accepted that to live this inexpensively in Manhattan, three blocks from a major train line, these are the terms. I've been accused of being part of the gentrification here but what he should've asked is if I cared, because I don't. I can't afford anything else. And if that means that I, a drug-free, non-violent and highly-educated person is displacing a violent junkie who can't pay rent, then the line between gentrification and uplifting the neighborhood is quite wide and blurry. I welcome more young professionals/hard workers/responsible renters/non-violent citizens/bored hipsters/people of the world who know that bass travels through walls and don't release their fluids into common spaces willy nilly to come live here. The more people who care about those things move in, the more likely those things will improve.

Lease? I broke my fkn lease. Fk that! This building is real dump. Some of the people are pure 100% trash. That is a fact. I've seen one of the security guards with a beer in hand and in uniform. Shots? Shit is scary around there. Folks are trigger happy and in 18 mos there 3 killed and a hell of a lot of shootings. I battled mice roaches and kept away from the roaches w guns. 1 arguement while waiting by the elevator (people are grimy when it comes to the elevator). NO CLASS when I sum it all up. They need to shut it down and get all out and renovate where needed. New faces=complete change. Need new elevators and stairwell upkeep. Other than that the views are nice.

I found a 4 bdrm for 1400. I have the whole floor to myself and this apartment is huge!!! I pay 50 more to have my own washer so I installed a 220 line for a dryer as well. two flights up and no neighbors. PRICELESS!!! You have options my friends many many options. 1990 is a mess and although it is getting better it will never shine if they don't get rid of the losers. Yup I said it. I was born and raised in the hood and came up real hard and I can surely tell that the people in this building are bitter. THey act as if owed something and the have no class. YUP!! I said it. Truth hurts.

This building is terrible and disgusting and most of that is due to the horrible company that owns it: Urban American. Google that name to find out more! KNW Apartments does not own it, they just process the rent checks.

my family was the first tenants besides the super that resided in 1990. we moved in on dec 1974.it was such a beautiful experience to be able to run up and down the long hallways before they added the swinging doors. we were able to have newspapers left at the door untouched and our neighbor and neighborhood cleaners mr.Hunt used to deliver our clothing to the door. we played basketball late at night when the night lights came on, we played chess, handball and had plenty of events right out back. the building was diverse and never had problems until the drug game started. the amenities were beautiful. who wouldn't want to be able to sleep on the terrrace on a warm summer night or to be able to go downstairs to do laundry on the premises? well, thanks to certain parents that weren't parenting the building got out of control. yes drugs were sold, tenants threw objects out of the windows injuring people below, yes there were drive bys and yes there were bodies between the doorway at the front entrance, robberies in the staircases etc. i loved 1990 because everyone at one time was one big family. i don't knock anyone from moving in.especially if the rent is reasonable. just be careful and mind your own. as far as i know nothing has really changed but the decor. good luck and god bless

1990 I lived there 11years and I lost my good beautiful children there. Mentally we moved in when they was young and my youngest was a baby.I moved there from the suburds which was a very bad discision. Im a single mother who went threw so much. In that big dirty overcharged rathole. When I moved in 11years ago. When the manager took us upstairs to see the apt. He wouldnt showed me the apt. I moved in he showed me one just like it. He said I wouldnt take it if he showed me .I moved in they had shades in the window cause 2bedtooms windows was shot up on the 11th floor.Im A hard working person I tried to keep a job. I went to college and worked at the same time full time. I told my kids do socialize with them people their not our cup of tea. Well most of my kids listened to me.But 2 daughters didnt listen to me. They was beautiful smart too dam friendly they got caught up.That ghetto ass building people come to your door to fight you if you deal with them.Me I would go in and out like revolving door I knew not to get familiar and make friends. My daughters became pure animals dealing with them people in 1990 I went threw the crazy shit in there. Its unbelieveable the things me and my childten experience in that bum ass drug infested funeral home. The elevators are horrible I almost fell to my death one day in May 2009 that A elevator I named it El toro security is scared of the dirty dudes that hang in and out the building scratching their balls scheming on people doing them dirty and running from cops 24.7 nothing changed but the year them people is low lives and idiots wasting their libes being plain ignorant disrespectful.Thats why I speak and kept it pushing and worried about my kids job and education.Dont move to 1990 you will f... Your whole life up. Even if you come and go and dont socialize still very bad environment the manager will fool you cause the lobby hallways and his office and fair market rent apt. Is fixed up but that has nothing to do with mice roaches elevators dangerous stairwells. My windows had bullets holes in 2windows when I moved in. I was I wouldve left then. Well im good now Thank God I moved out of that hellhole after 11years of crazyness now I listen to birds and crickets instead of arguments gunshots loud music. Long line for broken elevators, wasting money on hot shot combat and dcon. Im finally happy I made it out of hell. God is good and do everything for a reason. The super is nice and free utilities but other than that pure hell stay away run for your life. Worst place in Manhattan they dont do repairs unless its emergency and it still take forever. I regret moving there and leaving behind alot of good things for bums to have. When they not use to nothing.

I lived in 1990 for a long time raised kids worked and stayed to myself but it still was a never ending nightmare security aint shit my mailbox got broken into right in front of the 24.7 security and my income tax checks was stolen and cashed. Floods fires people dying all the time shooting robbies this is a horrible place to try to raise kids they will jump your kids grown smelly bums they will be bad infulence on your kids they will get them on drugs alcohol they will rape them. They will robbed your apt. They throw things out the window off the terrace people been taken to hospital people piss on you out the window. Robbed your apt. Throw your dog off the terrace from a very high floor. Kill people and leave them dead in starwells elevators are old as the building 1974 never worked always broken the news came to the buildimg June 2010 the manager wouldnt let them in he had security stop them from coming in 1990.The manager is a racist he dont like blacks and spanish people only their money and section 8 vouchers. He is lying on the poor blacks and spanish taking them to houding court right down the block. They been there way longer than him he is a blood sucking guy throwing people out there homes he
Dont care he dont live there. Thats good for him when he got punched in the face. And was scared to let people just walk in office now you have to make an appointment he knows he is wrong lying throwing people out there apts. Thats horrible they have no where to go. He fix up apts. Fair market rent not section 8 apts. He throw the poor section 8 blacks and hispanics out take them to court down the block call his self fixing the apt up for the white people. The white people is smart they moved in and moved right out cause they dont have to live in a hell hole. They can do way better than that. They need to help the poor get out and tear that ragged roach mice infested no heat always turning off the water slum out building down. That was the worst place I ever lived in my life. Im glad im gone finally. I lived in better places in Brooklyn goodness if you moved to 1990 welcome to hell. You dont have to listen you can go get your own experience elevators break down walking up all them stairs breathing hard my legs killing me. My last months there I stayed in the house alot sending people to the store. Im freightened of broken up elevators. Even elevator man said somebodys gonna die in elevators I moved 2012 im so happy so me and my babies wont die in them old broken down elevators. Dont move there if you love yourself. And you have people that care about you. 1990 is a deathtrap you moved there your committing suicide seriously no joke be safe stay clear. Cops made a mini precinct in community room instead of coming 3 blocks 24.7

AS OF NOVEMBER 17 THERE IS ONLY ONE ELEVATOR WORKING.

CAN WE ORGANIZE AND CHANGE THIS WITH THE INTERVENIENCE OF THE JUSTICE/ JUDICIAL SYSTEM?

TO EVERYONE WHO THINK HARLEM IS GREAT AND ALL THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS ARE WRONG...YOU ARE WRONG

I live in Taino Towers, and I have to say, every single positive comment about that building is wrong. I used to pass by 1990 everyday when I was in middle school...and it was scary every time. One time, I saw a huge gang with black masks on walk down the street...toward my way, and I actually had to walk through them...it was terrifying. I live there all my life... (14 years) and I always see shootouts and ambulances. But sadly, I don't see a lot of cops. Only a patrol passes by for 5 seconds and continues on.
DO NOT CONSIDER LIVING IN EAST HARLEM UNLESS YOU CHOOSE ONE OF THOSE BEAUTIFUL NEW CONDOS THEY MADE. AND STAY AWAY FROM TAINOS AND 1990. AND WAGNER.
Thank god I go to school in Soho now...I only have to be in Harlem when I leave my building and when I come back home...and even that is nerve-racking.

Living in 1990 / Harlem, Is like living in south central. This Ain't Cracker Town. Where you fool's messed up, was thinking because there's a recession, your going to move to Harlem to save money. Stupid's. This is a rough neighborhood. Think of upstate NY if your cant handle 1990. This building is total shit, i agree but what did you guys seriously expect. a trump building? this building def needs better management and fire the entire maintenance staff, all the staff are lazy and have no experience including the head super. Your better off fixing it yourself. Building is full of Mices, Super infested due to staff and management not doing there job period. Super, Riley is a racist, and wears the same clothes thats as old as the building and doesnt do anything worth giving credit. pest problems, all day, everyday. So many covered up holes, in walls that they eat right through the paper thin, sheet-rock with no insulation. You can punch right through your neighbors apt from yours if you dont hit a beam. Don't leave anything out in your apt, or any valuable items. Even ash trays out. mice will ninja and they will ransack through em. ive had mice in time eat threw a brand new bed box spring and decided to camp out. some real wilderness shit there in this building. never seen that ever. bought a cat and got most of them out! But betting they moved to the next apt without a cat. The lobby's get more attention than apt's. Its a mind fuck for the new tenants. If you ask old school tenants, they will tell you that people have thrown everything off the balconys. if you lived in the ghetto before you will survive! but i def dont recommend this building to anyone. You can find better!

I have been in this building, 1990 for over 15 years and I will say that it has gotten much better. New owners and renovations are happening now. New elevators and clean hallways and trash rooms (on 21). Great views and great reception even in the storms. I only hear the Metro North train when I am in the hall getting on the elevator. The laundry area is still in needed repair, but I guess the owner is getting to that also. This area is under regentrification and you can see all of the changes. A Chinese Billionaire has purchased 40 blocks around Pathmark which is closing in November. The post office is moving and The NYC Bus Depot on 126th has closed.....a condominium is going where Pathmark is and the Addict housing is being relocated. So they are turning this area totally around. And the ride on the M60 to LaGuardia Airport is just 30 minutes for 2.75 cents. I love my apartment and happy now more than ever that I chose The Miles. My occupation is BA.ED/educator/performer. No, I do not work for KNW or the owner. Angeldeciembre
